Day 1
Day_1_-_Incubator.jpg
Mr. Hooker delivered our 12 fertilized eggs today! We have 1 dark green egg, 2 dark brown eggs, 3 light green eggs, and 6 tan eggs.

It takes about 21 days for chicken eggs to hatch. We are very egg-cited and cannot wait for the chicks to hatch!

The incubator is a substitute for the mother chicken or hen. The incubator will keep the eggs dry temperature at 100 degrees F. The wet temperature in the incubator is 86 degrees F which provides approximately 51% humidity. We have an automatic egg turner that will turn the eggs every hour, first to the left then to the right.

We candled all 12 eggs today. We were able to see veins, an air sack, and a tiny chick growing inside 11 of the eggs.

We also candled a grocery store egg to compare the difference. Some kids said that the grocery store egg looked like it was glowing. Heather asked "What is the difference between a grocery store egg and our eggs?" Grocery store eggs come from a home where there are only hens. Our eggs come from homes where there are both hens and roosters (daddy chickens).

We cracked open the grocery store egg so we could see the yolk and air sack.

Day 10
IMG_1602.jpg

We saw 11 chicks growing inside the eggs today! The chick is getting bigger, about 1/3 of the egg is dark. Some of the chicks were very active and we were able to see them "bouncing" around inside the egg. Armin said that it looked like a super ball bouncing off the wall.

The chicks are very big and not moving around as much as the last time we candled the eggs. About 2/3 of the egg is dark now and we were only able to see a wing and claw moving. We still have 11 chicks growing. Hopefully we have kept the incubator at the correct humidity and temperature so the 11 chicks can hatch.

Since the chick is so big it was very easy to see the air sac - 2nd picture.

This is the egg that does not have a chick growing inside. There are no dark areas (chick) or veins - 3rd picture.

Day 20
Doskins_-_Empty_shell.jpg
First thing this morning, we could see one of the eggs has a small hole in it. It can take up to 12 hours for a chick to hatch. When we left for the day, we could hear peeping and one egg was gently rocking back and forth. There are two eggs with small holes. We can't wait to see what we will find in the morning!

The first chick was completely out of his shell at 11:17 pm mountain time! It was really neat to watch. I will work on getting a video posted tomorrow.

Day 21

Doskins_-_small_hole_in_egg.jpg
We came in to find 6 chicks! We can see small holes in 2 others. The chicks will stay in the incubator until their down is dry then they will be moved into the brooder.

What a busy day! We started with 12 eggs. When we candled the eggs we could see that 11 eggs had chicks growing inside. We had 9 eggs hatch! I think the kids are as egg-hausted as the little chicks!

Now that the chicks' down feathers have dried and fluffed up we can see that we have a colorful assortment of chicks.

We have 2 naked neck chicks, both are yellow but one has black on its back; 1 yellow chick, 1 reddish brown chick, 1 black chick, 1 dark gray chick, and 3 black chicks with yellow tipped wings and tails.
